When you decide on installing a hardwood floor in your home, there are a lot of decisions you will need to make. For example, you will need to decide what type of wood, color, underlayment, installation method and pattern you will use. Hardwood floors have a ton of options. Today Mike’s Custom Flooring would like to focus on hardwood floor patterns. There are different ways hardwood floors can be installed and some create beautiful patterns that enhance the floor and your home.
Hardwood Floor Patterns
There are several different patterns or designs that hardwood floors can utilize. As there are many different types of patterns, there are two primary categories that patterns are put in. They are regular patterns and parquet patterns. In these two categories there are a number of different patterns to choose from.
Straight or Horizontal Harwood Floor Patterns
Within the regular pattern category there are two major pattern types. The first pattern is straight or horizontal. The planks run up and down or side to side, going in one direction. Straight or horizontal patterns are the most common type of installation pattern as it is the fastest method to install and has the least amount of waste. Another benefit of a straight or horizontal pattern is that it helps make a room look bigger, which is ideal in small spaces.
Diagonal Wood Flooring
The second regular pattern is the diagonal. A diagonal pattern is similar to a straight or horizontal pattern as all of the planks run in the same direction. However, as the name suggests, the planks are installed on a diagonal and usually a 45 degree angle. A simple angle of the planks create a unique look to the room and also helps make a room look bigger. However, installing a diagonal pattern is a bit more challenging and there is a little bit more waste.
Different Patterns of Parquet Flooring
There are many different types of parquet patterns to choose from. Parquet patterns bring much more attention to your home and your hardwood floors. Additionally, parquet patterns are more challenging to install and should be done by a professional hardwood floor installer. One of the first and more popular type of parquet pattern is the herringbone pattern. The herringbone pattern is a very old design that dates back to ancient Rome. This pattern consists of a “V” shaped design. Two planks come together to form a “V” shape. The pattern continues down, making multiple rows going up and down throughout the entire floor. Herringbone patterns are very tricky and if not done correctly, can turn out terrible. Make sure to seek a professional if you want this timeless look added to your home. Another parquet pattern is the random pattern. As the name suggests, the floor looks random. To get a better picture, while installing a random pattern you may use a combination of wood types and color. Additionally the plank sizes can vary in size. Random patterns usually run in a single direction, much like the straight or horizontal pattern. A random pattern makes the floor look much more interesting.
