Hardwood Floors Are Easy to Clean

There are many reasons as to why hardwood floors are such a desired choice of material used for home’s flooring. For starters, wood floors look beautiful and bring a sense of nature to your home. Hardwood floors can also increase the value of a home. With proper maintenance, the floor can last decades. For those who want to sell their home, it helps add flavor to your home and increases your chances of selling your home and for more. Lastly, they are easy to clean. However, it is important to clean hardwood floor correctly. The steps are easy.

How to Deep Clean Hardwood Floors

Step 1. You will, of course, want to sweep or vacuum the surface of the hardwood floor first. You can use a soft bristled broom, dust mop with a soft pad, or even a hard surface vacuum. Many will recommend the vacuum since it picks up the dirt and debris that is sometimes missed with a broom or dust mop. Make sure to clean in the corners and along the edges. Remove the surface dirt and debris.
Step 2. In most cases you can simply use plain water and a non-abrasive mop to clean the surface of the wood. In some situations you may need a little more cleaning power. In such as case you can mix with the water a little bit of dish soap. However, if you use dish soap you will want to wash the floor again. Use plain water to rinse and remove all of the soapy residue. When mopping the floor make sure to squeeze most of the water out of the mop. You will want a damp mop only.
Step 3. After cleaning the hardwood floors, you will want to dry it. One trick is putting a fresh dry clean cloth or towel on the mop head and use the mop handle to dry the floor. You never want to leave water sitting on the floor. Moisture can penetrate the wood and cause the wood to expand or contract. Even worse, mold can develop underneath and decay the wood. For this reason it is recommended you dry all wood floors after you mop along with wiping up any spills as they occur.

Additional Hardwood Floor Care Tips

For natural hardwood floors you may want to buff the floor after cleaning them. You won’t need to buff or wax (depending on the type of wood) every time. About every three months it is recommended you give your hardwood floor a buffing to help extend the wood floor’s protective coat and beautiful shine.
