Today, there are so many hardwood flooring options on the market. Each option has its own beauty and style. Sometimes trying to narrow down the right hardwood flooring for your home can seem like a daunting task. There will most likely be several that you would love and would look amazing in your home. Mike’s Custom Flooring would like to share a buying guide with you to help you choose the best hardwood flooring for your home.
Choosing the Right Plank Width, Wide or Narrow
Until recently, you couldn’t find planks that weren’t 2-3 inches wide. Now there are so many plank options that it can seem hard to nail the right one down. You can choose planks that are wide at about 4-6 inches and have a higher end feel to them. You can also choose square or rectangular shapes instead. When you choose the most common planks, 2-3 inch strips, it gives your room an elongated feeling and can make the room seem larger.
How to Choose the Right Type of Wood Flooring for Your Home
For homeowners that have pets or children at home, you will most likely be looking for a durable hardwood flooring option. Oak is the most durable type of hardwood flooring you can buy. If you aren’t as concerned about the durability of the wood, you might enjoy the warmth of walnut, which is probably the second favorite among hardwood flooring options. Also good choices include cherry, hickory, ash, or maple flooring.
There are Several Grain Patterns
Depending on how the wood is cut, you will find different grain patterns. There are basically three ways wood is cut for flooring, plain sawn, quarter sawn and rift sawn. The most traditional choice is wood that is plain sawn. When boards are rift sawn, the grain is long and linear. Quarter sawn is similar to rift but will showcase an iridescence when you look at the wood at the right angle. When you are looking for a contemporary look, many people choose a combination of rift and quarter sawn boards.
Hardwood Floor Finish Options
You can choose to have your finish applied after the flooring is installed, or you can choose flooring that has the finish on before installations happens. Most flooring comes already finished. Having it finished after installation gives you the chance to hide any blemishes or imperfections that may happen during installation. There are a wide selection of stains that come down to personal preference and the design of your home.
